Norfolk, VA - Saturday July 17, 2010
David H. McNerney was awarded the 2010 Ralph E. Lingert Service Award at the associations National Reunion.
The following citation was read by National President Phil Menendez.
“David McNerney showed his worth as a Soldier during multiple tours in Vietnam, including his actions on March 22, 1967 where he earned the Medal of Honor while serving as 1SG with A/1-8 IN of 4ID.
After retiring from the Army, David has consistently understood and lived up to the special place he has with 4ID veterans and current Soldiers as our division's only living Medal of Honor recipient. At the dedication of the Three Man Statue at the Vietnam Wall in 1984, David was there - in the 4ID Association hospitality suite as the classic example of a 4ID veteran and visible throughout this key event for Vietnam veterans.
Whenever asked in years since then, David has represented all Medal of Honor recipients, and all 4ID veterans, in working with active duty 4ID Soldiers under numerous commanding generals, attending 4IDA national reunions, and helping the 4IDA leadership in any way that he could. David McNerney is an inspiration to all who meet him. His humble demeanor, his pride in his service with the 4ID and the US Army, and his recognition that he is a symbol of heroism that is sorely needed in our country, help in our association's recruiting efforts, in instilling pride in the division for our young Soldiers, and inspiring the leadership of our association to work harder and accomplish more.
Those of us who know David are honored to stand in the shadow of a true American hero.”
The Ralph E. Lingert Service Award is named in honor of past National President and Financial Secretary Ralph E. Lingert. It is an “Ivyman of the Year” award presented to that Association member demonstrating the devotion to duty and steadfast and loyal dedication to this Association embodied and exemplified by Ralph E. Lingert.
